Please visit my page about how to make your own bath salts for a easy and inexpensive alternate to commercial bath salts!

Bath salts have been around for years and remain one of the health & beauty market’s most popular items.  They glisten beautifully in the light, and with different colorations on the crystals they can seem almost gem-like with their glittering facets.

Salt is an ancient commodity, even in some cultures being used as currency.  History has records of Hippocrates healing people by immersing them in sea water thousands of years ago, and still to this day people flock to the Dead Sea to reap from the purported healing benefits of its salt-laden waters.

Bath salts themselves have been around for so long there’s no true record of their history.  The Romans used to have public baths with sea salts used periodically.  Bath salts have been around for years and are essentially just a blend of the salt crystals themselves, fragrance, a colorant and oftentimes an oil.  They soften the water, scent the air, and any oils help with moisturizing the skin.

Salt crystals come in different sizes and can make quite a stunning presentation when colored separately and then mixed together, each different size crystal being a darker or paler version of the color.  There are also virtually no limits in the scents available.  Fragrance manufacturing is so complex that you can buy bath salts in many fragrances, everything from the traditional Lavender essential oil, to a fragrance that smells like Froot Loops.

Bath salts can be costly to buy but are actually quite simple and cost-effective to make at home.  You can make them with large crystal sea salt purchased from an online store, or even with salt from your local grocer.  Fragrances can be essential oils, fragrances, or even herbs from your garden.  Making homemade bath salts are a fun project for kids as well, especially in the aforementioned Froot Loops scent.

Modern technology has made many of the necessary supplies available to everyone.  Even the smallest hobbyist should have no problem buying the necessary ingredients to make high quality, incredible smelling and feeling bath salts.  The salt crystals themselves are readily available, and there are quite a few retailers who sell small quantities of fragrances, essential oils, herbs, and even the carrier oils.

When making your own, getting the proportions of salt, fragrance, colorant and oils can be hit or miss.  Through trial and error, you can figure out the right balance of ingredients for how you like your bath products.  It is recommended, however, to either do extensive research prior to starting or perhaps invest in a good guide on how to create bath products.

It isn’t that it’s so difficult to mix together salt and oils, but with certain ingredients like colorants and fragrances, there are safe ratios, as these ingredients can be quite concentrated and intense.

There is quite a bit of free information online, but unfortunately not all of it is reliable and has caused some embarrassingly painful mistakes for some people.  Finding a dependable starting place to direct you in how to make quality bath salts will save you time and money, and is well worth it.
